Non-Federal Organizations

Program Overview

Individual placements (internships) are a highly effective means of gaining direct experience and contributing to land management. The EPIC Program facilitates these opportunities by connecting dedicated individuals with a diverse network of non-federal partners. This network includes State Agencies, Friends Groups, Conservancies, and other nonprofit and for-profit organizations committed to a conservation ethos.

Through these collaborations, a wide array of positions are available throughout the U.S., fostering professional development, experiential learning, and impactful contributions to natural and cultural resource management.

Placements are available year-round and typically last between 3-12 months, offering flexible engagement for all involved.

What We Do
ACE EPIC Members work with organizations in a number of capacities, such as: habitat restoration and natural resource management, fuels reduction, non-native species management, cultural resources and archeology, wildlife surveys and monitoring, environmental education, visitor services, historic preservation, physical sciences, mapping and GIS support, and the list continues.

Where We Work
ACE EPIC has had projects in 50+ states and US territories, and continues to serve across the United States and its territories.

Why Individual Placements?
Individual placements offer the opportunity for ACE Members to work directly with our partners to provide much-needed support to valuable projects while gaining the hands-on and skills-building experience required to begin and advance their careers. The mentor / mentee relationship is the building block for creating the next generation of stewards.
Benefits
Beyond direct experience with the organization, all ACE positions are paid opportunities, with participants being provided a living allowance during their terms of service. Some positions will also provide housing or housing reimbursement, training and gear support, and relocation assistance. These are detailed in the individual position announcements located on the ACE application page. Participants may also be eligible to earn an AmeriCorps education award on select positions.
Selection Criteria
ACE tailors every recruitment effort to each position that is posted, and typically collaborates with our partners throughout the recruitment process from the crafting of the position announcement, through the interviews, all the way up to final selection. In the review phase, applications are vetted and rated according to the following criteria – relevant educational and work experience, oral and written communication skills, maturity, professionalism, technical knowledge and expertise, evidence of adaptability and adventurousness, and ability to work effectively with diverse audiences. Select candidates are then interviewed by ACE and/or Partner Staff. Final candidates will be required to undergo a background check before beginning their assignment.
