EPIC Member Serving with the BLM Shares Their Story as a Lizard Wrangler/Monitor

My current role in the ACE EPIC program is being a Lizard Wrangler/Monitor for the El Centro FO in El Centro, California. I was born in El Centro and raised in Heber but from Imperial Valley, CA. I have always had an appreciation for nature but being from a small town like Heber my experiences have been fairly limited so when starting this term, I not only got to see and learn more about my county, but I also learned so much about the impact of what we’re doing by monitoring Flat Tailed Horned Lizards and what it means for conserving endemic species as a whole.
A lot of people overlook Imperial County because of our low statistics in anything other than geothermal energy, agriculture, or border ordeals but for someone like me, who has an interest in the geology and formations that took to get a certain place to where it is present day, I find our land to be very diverse and unique with the flora or fauna. It’s definitely a sight to see.
My goals coming into this position were to challenge myself in ways where I could push myself to do more work and develop more self-discipline than I ever have. Along with this, I was hoping for the obvious, which would be to work with wildlife and travel around the place I grew up in, but more in a backcountry setting than the city setting.
As I’m already a month into my term I find that my goals have stayed the same and that’s because I’m finding a lot of fulfillment in what I’m doing! Practicing different tasks like following specific protocols and routines when it comes to monitoring flat tails has helped me get used to more strict routines where it’s necessary to do every step and not try bypassing just for ease of it; slow and steady is key. And I can definitely say I’ve gotten to see Imperial County in a new and different light more than I ever have before. I’ve been to the west and east sides so far and I’m noticing how much more that I’ve seen now than I ever expected. With this now I can see a story play out in the geography in certain plots like the way washes pile rocks in certain places.
After finishing this term I’d for sure reflect on the fact I got the opportunity to handle a remarkable, protected, endemic species for the first and probably the only time in my life. It’s an honor to even be able to be associated with such a crew that all seem highly qualified compared to me but the way we are all able to treat each other equally and take an interest in each other’s lives will stay with me. Starting from a place where I had only seen small parts of the Valley, to then many different ones in the span of the term to then back to my normal routine will get some getting used to as well. I’ll have dreams for days about the sunrises and beautiful things I’ve seen during my time at ACE.
For those looking to get into surveying Flat Tailed Horned Lizards, I suggest you consider the heat and how versatile it is in the desert. There are days where we reached our heat threshold on time but then days where we’d reach it a whole hour early! I’d also be ready for anything! Whether it’s seeing unexpected furry or scaly friends, or having time changes or setbacks, it’s all accounted for in conservation, but it’s important to remember the work being done is important and it’s you who’s doing it. Thanks to this term I’ve noticed how the conservation community has a lot of respect for animals in all shapes and sizes; honestly, an organism doesn’t even have to walk or breathe and a conservationist out there will likely know a lot about it! It’s an overall open and accepting community to newcomers, which I’m sure in a place where the goal is to prepare for the future, it’s relieving to know it is in good hands.

Actually a couple of music albums get me through long work days! The first would be Souled Out by Jhene Aiko which really puts me in a calm and centered mood all about being connected to everything around me. Another good album I streamed a lot would be Blood by Kelsey Lu, mainly string instrument songs with lyrics pertaining to the Earth, stars, and cycles of life. I like to match songs to what I’m doing, kind of like if I was in a movie! It definitely helps make the day move faster, especially when it’s so hot.
