What are some of the things that you've learned?
The most useful thing that came with the experience was the fundamentals of
Timber Cruising, not many people know what goes on in the day to day of a cruiser, and it was really amazing to get to experience that work first hand.
The most impactful was definitely the environment created by everyone on the team. I've brought it up a lot and I'm afraid of sounding like a broken record, but I'd be terribly upset if Region 8's Timber strike team didn't get the hype they deserved.
What are some of the useful skills you've gained?
The overall experience of basic forestry into Advanced. It's what I came here to do, and Wildland Fire was never a part of my original plan, neither was being the SGA President but ambition goes a long way, as does talent. Put the two together with consistent work and you'll go wherever you want, it's up to you to create the life you deserve.
The most impactful thing about Job Corps is the people who I've met who have similar ambitions, strong work ethics, and good heads on their shoulders. "You are who your friends are." There are also three instructors who I will name drop: Austin Ritch, Joshua Welter, and John Dunzweiler, all wonderful teachers and phenomenal role models. Big thanks to them, and all the work they do for the program!
How has this experience shaped what you want to do next in your career or in conservation?
I've always wanted to be a Conservationist, an Ecologist, or a Biologist (I want to be all three). Nature and her workings have always been so astounding and awe inspiring to me, all these programs really did was help me solidify my passions, and help me to create concrete pathways towards my dreams and goals.
If someone was considering Job Corps or ACE, what would you tell them based on your experience?
I would like to state that my experience is a bit biased, I came from the 116th center ranked nationally, to now the #1 Forest Service center. I was a dorm leader in two weeks of being here, the President in two months and I was out working with ACE when I was elected.
The entirety of my time in the programs being mentioned, I have pushed my foot on the gas pedal and never even glanced at the brakes. But that catches up to you, and to be absolutely honest it isn't always the right thing to do, take time to rest. Take time to slow down. Work hard and rest hard.
I have talked to a lot of people, and a lot of new intakes, and you can tell who wants to be there for their future and who's not sure, and who just wants a bed and three meals. Come as you are, do what you can. Give everyday your 100% but understand that it will not be that same 100% tomorrow, or even that afternoon.
The program is built to give you a leg up on a nation that has been in since 2008, how do you want to provide for yourself? What do you want your life to look like? Are you going to let the worries and woes of the world stop you from pursuing what is rightfully yours? The motivation to keep going has to come from within, the faith in yourself has to be undeniable, the work and effort you put in, is what you will get out of it when you get out.
Take advantage of every single bit of information that you can, then go out into the world and continue to strive for greatness. Blessed be your journey towards the birth of your dreams. May all that you desire come into fruition. Lead with authenticity.
