A Reflection by Eric M. EPIC US Fish and Wildlife Service Member
My experience with ACE has been an amazing opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. One of the most meaningful parts of my conservation experience was working with the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). I started wanting to gain hands-on experience in conservation, but along the way I took on more responsibility and eventually became a crew leader.
As a YCC crew leader, I learned that conservation work is about much more than working outdoors. It is about teamwork, leadership, communication, responsibility, and making sure the job gets done safely and correctly. One project I am especially proud of was helping lead our crew in building and completing 12 picnic tables. Seeing the project go from an idea and raw materials to finished picnic tables that people can actually use was extremely rewarding.
Being a crew leader also taught me how to work with different personalities, keep everyone motivated, solve problems, and lead by example. There were challenges along the way, but those challenges helped me become more confident and showed me that I am capable of taking on leadership responsibilities.
What I enjoyed most was knowing that our YCC group was learning valuable life lessons. The work we were doing would have an impact beyond our time on the job. Whether we were building picnic tables, maintaining areas, or working on other conservation projects, we were leaving something behind that could benefit visitors and the community.
My experience with ACE and YCC has also helped shape my future goals. It showed me how much I enjoy working with people, teaching others, leading a team, and working in agriculture and conservation. I would recommend conservation work to anyone because you gain much more than work experience - you gain leadership skills, hands-on knowledge, confidence, and the opportunity to make a real difference.
I am proud of what our crew accomplished, especially completing the 12 picnic tables, and I am grateful that ACE and YCC gave me the opportunity to step up as a leader and discover even more about what I want to do in the future.
