My name is Kelsey Rivera and my role at El Yunque National Forest is with Visitor Information Services. When EYNF was under limited visitation per day, I was one of the first interactions with every visitor making their way up to the recreational area. Now that we are no longer limiting visitors, my job consists of interacting with visitors at different rec sites as well as working on projects to help keep the area clean and up to date.
What was your goal coming into this role?
My goal coming into this role was to be able to work with the Forest Service here at El Yunque National Forest and continue helping to conserve out forest. Although that might not be the reality, I have had the opportunity to join different departments of FS to see how they operate, but I’ve noticed that public service was never my favorite and yet it’s something I’m really good at.
What is something you think you’ll reflect on long after finishing your term in this position?
After finishing, I’ll reflect on the best times I’ve had working at EYNF. There are plenty of hard days here, but the most gratifying parts are the days working as a team with some of the best people and work environment I’ve had the privilege to be a part of.
What advice would you have for those who would like to move to a similar role as you have now? What have you learned about the conservation community through your role?
If there’s some advice I can give for a similar role it would be to have patience. My role involves dealing with the public which can be quite challenging and draining, but there’s a lot of visitors that help turn around a dull moment and helps you remember why you do what you do.
Share a book or music/podcast rec for long work days or remote work locations!
If I have a slow day I’ll read the Fourth Wing series or listen to Bad Bunny’s new album for some feel-good music.
